Hi Everyone

Here is the progress since our last update on June 6. We’ve built another 1,000 machines, bringing us to 3,000 and shipped over 2,800. The remaining machines from this batch are in the process of shipping and quality remains high. We expect black Kickstarter units to complete in MP4, and a large portion of Indiegogo to complete in MP5.

As a reminder, the Indiegogo campaign started after the completion of the Kickstarter campaign, which is why Kickstarter orders are fulfilled first. There are some exceptions (i.e., early referrals). We’ve received emails from Indiegogo backers asking about their delivery, not realizing that Kickstarter orders are being fulfilled first.

Although the build-rate for MP3 looks similar to MP2, we are building complete units much faster. With MP2 we were able to build large batches of sub-assemblies before final assembly because we were missing a key component and were waiting for delivery. In MP3 we were building full machines from start-to-finish without an inventory of pre-built sub-assemblies.

Fulfillment

Each Backer fulfillment requires work from our team to prepare customs paperwork, payment collection, etc. based on the original pledge and country because there is no single flow from purchase -> VAT / Duty calculation -> shipping -> paperwork like there is for a new retail order. Because of this, we batch fulfillment to specific countries in waves.

We have generally fulfilled up to backer 3,000 in most countries - in some countries with lower total backer numbers, we send a higher volume of machines past Backer 3000 to reduce the overhead of the billing and customs paperwork. For example, some countries may only have 30-50 Backers, and would take up 5% of the US line - but it still makes sense to fulfill them all, especially if they had to wait until MP3 for their deliveries.

We expect to begin MP4 shipments in September so it includes the new hard foam packaging, and then MP5 immediately thereafter. The team debated whether delaying MP4 for the upgraded packaging was worthwhile, and decided it was to minimize any units arriving with shipping damage and allow Backers to more easily travel with their Meticulous.

We’ve had a small number of machines delivered with a bent baseplate. The cause is if heavy packages are loaded on-top from specific orientation, enough stress can be applied to bend the baseplate. Although it’s a small number of backers and a simple baseplate replacement, we don’t want anyone else to have this experience.

If you are from a country with few Backers in the EU, we have likely shipped as there is a high degree of overlap with the clearance process. For the remaining long-tail of countries with fewer backers In Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Central / South America we expect to fulfill your machines in the next batch. We appreciate that it can be frustrating to see Backers with later numbers receive their machines. We’ve done our very best to balance fairness with reducing the high operational complexity of having to ship to so many different countries right out of the gate.

A few countries with open issues:

  • China is a unique situation where due to our factory location, all the current paperwork assumes export of the machine. To not export a machine requires a different process and paperwork, and impacts VAT refunds on input materials.
  • Spain requires unique paperwork for a direct import of a coffee machine. We’re still in the process of setting up another route to import into the EU and then ship inter-EU to Spain, which is a different process whose requirements we meet.
  • Thailand where we are still working with Customs to explain the difference Machine vs. Advanced Software & Services price re import Duty and VAT determination.

CRM

To allow backers to look up their specific batch allocation: we have continued investing in our internal tooling, but realized the bar is much higher if we provide access to Backers directly and have not made access available yet. The system contains personal information and must reflect every change in machine color, portafilter handle, and address. Once these things are ready we would still like to make it available.

White Machines

In our May update, we said we were sourcing white funnels for our boiling test. The white funnel passed our boiling test and ‘2 day old dried coffee’ test. The boiling test is our most extreme test for powder coating, where we boil the funnel for 24 hours to stress the coating and adhesion. The second test is to see whether dried coffee leaves any staining when eventually wiped off.

We have placed an order for 200 sets of components for white machines for testing. We’ll assemble as many as possible - this is in addition to the 1000 Black units in MP4. Early backers can opt to take delivery and share feedback on how the coating looks, feels and performs to inform whether we place a larger order.

Accessories

We expect the most important accessories to be ready by the end of MP4.

  • Hard foam packaging: We have a major upgrade to packaging that will be used in both cardboard packaging as well as the travel case. We’re moving this to production. We expect it to reduce the risk of shipping damage or bent baseplates and be easier to pack and transport the machine.

  • Travel Case: Beginning drop testing to validate packaging performance translates to the travel case and then moving to production.

  • iPad Holder: Design is locked and we are preparing for the first production run.
  • Funnel Lid: Testing pre-production design improvements based on results from our stress testing.
  • Tamper & Tamping Station: Evaluating final supplier selections ahead of pre-production samples.
  • Mirror 360: Finalizing pre-production details. Because the accessory includes magnets, shipping is more complex, so we need to define the best logistics strategy before scaling.
  • Shot Splitter: Reviewing final performance test results before committing to manufacturing.

Milk

Now that espresso manufacturing is reliable we’ve staffed the Design-for-Manufacturing team for Milk. This is about taking the design and working with our manufacturing partner and suppliers to make the design changes that enable the most effective way to manufacture at scale, and balance repairability with complexity. This process is necessarily iterative and requires us to rely on partners to evaluate the design and make suggestions we can test. We will share more once that process is complete and we move into beta testing.

We think that the best way to estimate a timeline regarding Milk is to build the next iteration of the design as fast as possible with all of our learnings from Espresso and let the prototype and the tests tell the story. This design iteration incorporates reliability learnings from mass production and we expect they will help reduce the total duration of the DFM phase.

Software

In May we told you our top software priority was robustness - especially Wi-Fi reliability. Those changes have now worked their way through our Nightly and Beta channels, and this week they're reaching everyone.

Stable Release (2026M1330) is rolling out gradually to all machines this week.

Beta Release (2026M1320) goes further on Wi-Fi: improved health monitoring and recovery, faster and more reliable connections, a more responsive Wi-Fi menu with clearer status messages, and structured diagnostics that help us investigate connectivity issues in the field. Thank you to our Discord beta volunteer group - your reports directly shaped this release.

Meticulous App 1.3.5 (iOS) is now on the App Store, with some of our most-requested features: Local Profiles (create, edit, and organize profiles without connecting to a machine, then copy them over when ready), Known Devices for quick switching between machines, profile transfers including images and descriptions, drag-and-drop stage reordering, and major Shot Mirror upgrades - smoother video with audio, camera switching, saving and sharing, and auto-record when brewing begins. The Android release is in progress on the Play Store; until then the latest version remains available via the beta channel.

Known issue: the Report a Bug option is temporarily down and we're working to restore it.

On a personal note, we had planned for this update to go out earlier, but unfortunately Carlos’ mother was re-admitted to the ICU after an emergency surgery, and it impacted our timing as Carlos typically writes the updates. This was communicated in the Discord, but we realize a minority of Backers are active in the Discord.
